Hunting Mighty Murray Cod
Kayak Fishing Story Hunting Mighty Murray Cod. Who doesn’t mind a last minute adventure? I certainly don’t, recently I had the opportunity to head to Copeton Dam in NSW in search of the mighty Murray Cod. The dam at 70% has a lot of water to cover in search of a fish and I only had two days to catch a cod from my kayak. For those of you that have never caught a cod, they can literally be the fish of a thousand casts and be a great test of patience.
Day 1:
After checking in I went straight down to my intended launch spot, my plan was to peddle up into the gorge area where the water is smaller and easier for me to cover more effectively. Once I got going, it took the best part of 2-3hrs for me to get there as I was stopping and casting at all the good looking structure. Not taking anything away from the rest of the dam but the steep walls of the dam lined with huge boulders is absolutely stunning country to find yourself fishing in. These boulders mixed with timber makes for the perfect ambush spot for a Murray Cod to hide as well. To cut a long day in the kayak short, I ended up with one cod following my lure all the way to the kayak but didn’t commit to a bite.
Day 2:
Once again I thought my best chance of finding a fish was to peddle straight back up to where I found the fish the day before. Once there and following a heap of casts /hrs later I was starting to lose confidence that I was going to find a cod for the trip. I then opted to troll my spinner bait and just start covering ground whilst pedaling and as luck would have it 5 minutes later I was hooked up and pleasantly surprised when my target species come alongside the kayak. It’s such a nice feeling to tick another species off my list from a kayak. For the trip I ended up with 4 Murray Cod and 1 Yellow Belly which made the trip well worth the effort.
Hobie Pro Angler 12 360
My Hobie PA 12 360 had plenty of room for all my fishing gear, rods, food ect. to keep me comfortable on the water for a full day mission as well as being comfortable to cover a lot of km’s each day. Time to plan the next adventure.
I hope the fishing has been great for you for the start of 2024.
